Christ statue and Corcovado

Corcovado mountain (Hundback) bears at 704 m above sea level the town symbol of Rio the Janeiro: the well known, 1000 tons weighting Christ the Redeemer seen from every corner of the metropolis. Clear sight allows especially in the evenings a spectacular view on the Southern town districts of Leblon, Ipanema, Copacabana and on Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas close to the Botanical Garden (Jardim Botanico). Sugarloaf, Botafogo Bay, Niteroi Bridge, Rio downtown and the Maracana Soccer Stadium are other sites of interest. Orientation is easy with traffic signs showing the directions to the most important sightseeing places.

Most tourists take the rack railway departing from Cosme Velho 513 to Corcovado. Bus #184 or #180 and bus line “Rua Cosme Velho” take you there from Rio downtown and Gloria. If you are at Copacabana or Ipanema you need to take bus #583 and coming from Leblon it is bus #584 which takes you to Cosme Velho 513. The cable car runs from 8:30 am to 6:30 pm.

Recommendation: Hire a taxi and negotiate a fix rate with the driver to take you to Corcovado. You save a lot of time and the most impressive scenery is worth stopping now and than.
